How to Grow Kalanchoe Pinnata Plant
Kalanchoe pinnata, also known as the “Mother of Thousands” or “Bryophyllum pinnatum,” is a succulent plant that is relatively easy to grow. Here are guidelines on how to cultivate Kalanchoe pinnata:
1. Selecting a Suitable Location:
- Kalanchoe pinnata thrives in well-draining soil and prefers bright, indirect sunlight. It can tolerate some direct sunlight but may scorch in intense, full sun.
- If you are growing it indoors, place the plant near a window with filtered sunlight.
2. Soil Preparation:
- Use a well-draining potting mix, preferably a cactus mix or a mix designed for succulents.
Ensure the container or planting area has drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.
3. Planting:
- If planting in a pot, place the plant in the center and cover the roots with soil. Water the plant lightly after planting.
If propagating from offsets or leaf cuttings, allow them to callus for a day before planting them in the soil.
4. Watering:
- Kalanchoe pinnata is a succulent and is adapted to store water in its leaves. Water the plant when the top inch of soil is dry.
- During the growing season (spring and summer), water more frequently, but reduce watering in the dormant season (fall and winter).
5. Fertilization:
- Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half-strength during the growing season. Fertilize once a month.
- Avoid over-fertilizing, as succulents generally do not require heavy feeding.
