American Wintergreen, Gaultheria procumbens
Gaultheria procumbens, also called the eastern teaberry, the checkerberry, the boxberry, or the American wintergreen, is a species of Gaultheria native to northeastern North America. It makes an excellent groundcover in shady areas of the landscape, tolerating even heavy shade. In July to September, wintergreen produces small white flowers, followed by bright red berries that can remain on the plant through winter.
